  • Abstract
The quarries located behind Gochang’s Juklim-ri Dolmens are one of the important elements of the World Heritage designated “Gochang, Hwasun and Ganghwa Dolmen Sites”. In order to shed new light on the value of of the Juklim-ri quarries, this paper revie http:// ws examples of quarries and quarrying landscapes in pre-hispanic South America and prehistoric Europe. These examples act to deconstruct several preconceptions about quarries and quarrying practices that have commonly been shared within the Korean archaeological community. The presence of quarries in which rocks have already been shaped into blocks through natural weathering processes, the notion of ‘tired stones’ that were left behind because they refused to move during transportation, and the interpretation that the location of megalithic monuments near quarries was actually due to the significance of the location of the quarry all contribute to new ways of understanding the Juklim-ri dolmen quarries. In addition, attempts were made to apply recent theories in world archaeology, such as Latour’s actor-network theory (ANT), that have acted to redefine the human-material relationship in order to provide alternative understandings of the Juklim-ri dolmens. In addition, the value of the quarry as a ‘heritage site’ was considered. The elements that should be paid attention to in order to reveal the authenticity and integrity, and thus the Outstanding Universal Value, of quarries as World Heritage Sites, and how quarries are related to geological heritage was discussed. Through this, the value of the Gochang Juklim-ri quarries was revisited.
