  • Abstract
    The Eunpyeong-gu area has undergone many changes from the time of the Joseon Dynasty to the present, with the disappearance, renaming, and deletion of several administrative boundaries and place names. Place names as marked on old maps, historical geographical texts, and modern maps have sometimes been retained, but in many cases, they have disappeared, have been renamed, or removed. These changes in place names and administrative boundaries can be confirmed through the place names and boundaries recorded in old maps, historical geographical texts, and modern maps. The scope of this research is the renaming of place names and changing of administrative boundaries in the Eunpyeong-gu area as observed from those marked on old maps, historical geographical texts, and modern maps. Data from 11 types of old maps, 16 sheet, 8 types of historical geographical texts, and 2 types of modern maps(Map of Gyeongseong) were used to identify the place names and boundaries of the Eunpyeong area. It was clarified that natural place names such as Jeonseokhyun(磚石峴) and Baengnyeonsan(白蓮山) in the Eunpyeong area are still retained or renamed and used presently, while place names derived from names of people, such as Anyangdong(安養洞), Yangcheolpyeong(梁鐵坪), and Yeongseo Station(迎署驛), have disappeared or have been renamed since 1914. The Eunpyeong area can be said to be a transportation route and a religious and cultural space. The microscopic research scope of the Eunpyeong area was established to examine the changes in place names over time. A future study is expected to expand the scope of the research area by investigating the basic data corresponding to the area, and the same methodology will be applied to conduct regional research.
