Researcher Bio
Beomshik Shin is a scholar in International Politics specializing in Eurasia’s International Relations. Since the birth of the discipline of International Politics, Russia’s role has been important in Eurasia and, from this perspective, the change in Eurasian international relations following the Russian (Soviet’s) control of Eurasia and the dissolution of the Soviet Union has grown into a major field of research. Despite this, there have been few attempts to establish Eurasia as a ‘region’ or to reveal the characteristics of Eurasia’s international relations from a regional/ political point of view, and such attempts have been unsuccessful so far. Moreover, the stories of Russia and Central Asia, which have occupied a large area and have coexisted in Asia for a long time, have not been recognized as ‘Asia’ or approached as a subject of study. However, the issue of defining and objectifying the Russia-Eurasian region in order to properly understand the newly emerging ‘Mega-Asia’ in the 21st Century has become an important question. This has become a key point of contact for connecting Eurasian studies with Mega-Asia research. Following this context, Shin’s research reveals important implications for this project. He has defined Eurasia as a ‘region’ and conducted research on capturing the characteristics of International Politics in this region from the point of view of Comparative Regional Studies.
