- Abstract
This study examines family and marriage values in contemporary Asia through ‘value proximity,' utilizing data from the 2022 Social Values Survey in Asian Cities (10,500 respondents across 15 metropolitan areas). Hierarchical clustering of 120 population groups (based on city, gender and age) revealed a six-cluster typology of value orientations, ranging from ‘Lowest Low Egalitarian' to ‘Big Family Traditionalist.' The findings demonstrate that values are shaped by both regional legacies and global forces. Notably, clusters frequently transcend national boundaries; specific age-gender groups in distant cities often show stronger alignment with each other than with local counterparts. Contextualized within the Second Demographic Transition theory and Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, the study highlights hybridized trajectories of value shifts. These insights contribute to a nuanced understanding of the structural and transnational forces shaping evolving family norms in Asia.
