What is the role of a historian? This article offers a tentative discussion of my perspectives on the discipline of history. Essentially, historians compile their ‘facts’ to validate the past while pondering future implications. It delves into the future of historical research and Korean studies, drawing from my research on Dasan Jeong Yak-yong. I interpret Dasan’s work within the historical context of 19th-century Joseon, but also consider its relevance for the 21st century. Dasan recognized the societal issues of late Joseon, emphasizing the importance of family restoration to prevent national decline. He envisioned a “socially constructed family” based on strong relationships beyond blood ties, essential for societal cohesion. Securing basic living necessities was crucial for family maintenance, and education could expand family ties into community relationships. With a stable family and self-reliant populace, capable individuals could serve as bureaucrats. Dasan advocated for fair wealth distribution and just selection of officials to ensure long-term sustainability. The challenges facing Korea today mirror those of 19th-century Joseon. I propose that a creative re-examination of Dasan’s work offers practical insights for Korean historians to address contemporary issues.
