- Abstract
Yim Suk-Jay is a towering figure in the history of Korean anthropological and ethnological research. Focusing on his two essays, published in 1970-1971, in which he proposes a theory of Korea’s shamanism tradition and its broad popular-religious milieus, this paper reviews how he understands the cosmopolitical structure found in this tradition and what he intends to convey by the idea of a parallelistic worldview. Key to this understanding is, to our surprise, a set of concepts on modern political life, such as sovereignty and equality.
